Kenner had licensed the DC Heroes, and Mattel had He-Man, but wanted to hedge in case superheroes became the next big fad. The following issue had a cover story on the series, which had been renamed Secret Wars. The series was announced as Cosmic Champions in the eleventh issue of the Marvel Age news magazine, cover dated February 1984. The series was conceived by Marvel Comics' editor-in-chief Jim Shooter. It was tied in with a toy line and a role-playing game of the same name from Mattel. The series was written by Jim Shooter, with art by Mike Zeck and Bob Layton.
